Frequently Asked Questions

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a federal tax (5%) applied nationwide. Provincial Sales Tax (PST or RST) is a separate tax charged by individual provinces on retail goods/services. Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) is a combined single tax merging federal GST and provincial sales taxes, administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) in participating provinces.

Currently, five provinces charge Harmonized Sales Tax: Ontario (13% HST), New Brunswick (15% HST), Nova Scotia (15% HST), Prince Edward Island (15% HST), and Newfoundland and Labrador (15% HST).

Quebec charges GST (5%) plus Quebec Sales Tax (QST) at 9.975%. Historically, QST was calculated compound (tax on tax), but since 2013, QST is calculated as a simple percentage on the base price before GST, matching other provincial sales tax structures.

In Canada, you do not have to register for GST/HST if your gross taxable sales (including global revenues) are under $30,000 CAD over four consecutive calendar quarters. This is known as the "Small Supplier" exemption. Once you cross this threshold, registration is mandatory.
